Avoiding injection Molding Defects, And…

To design a successful plastic part for injection molding, you must maintain uniform wall thickness and add proper draft angles to prevent defects.

Over 80% of molding defects—such as warping, sink marks, and incomplete filling—stem from poor part design rather than the machine itself.

If your product will eventually be made injection molded parts you need to understand this stuff when designing your prototypes using 3D printing.

Injection Molding Basics: An Introduction to Designing Molded Parts

How draft, radii, wall thickness, and other design factors improve part manufacturability
Parts arrive at injection molding in different ways. Some are first prototyped through 3D printing where moldability considerations are of limited concern. Others take a more traditional machining route that allows for iterative testing in engineering-grade materials similar to that of molding. And many simply jump right to injection molding.

We've learned from experience that, before production begins, there are important design elements to consider. These may improve the moldability of the parts, and ultimately, may reduce the chance of production hiccups, cosmetic defects and other issues.

Mold and Tooling Terms

• A-Side (Cavity): The fixed half of the mold that forms the exterior, highly cosmetic surfaces of a part.

• B-Side (Core): The moving half of eryhe mold where the part usually stays and ejector pins push it out.

• Sprue, Runner, and Gate: The channel system that routes melted plastic from the nozzle into the mold cavity.

• Undercut: A recessed or protruding feature on a part that prevents it from opening straight out of a standard two-piece mold.

Machine and Process Terms

• Barrel: The heated cylinder where plastic pellets melt and build up pressure before injection.

• Clamp Force: The heavy tonnage pressure that keeps the two mold halves tightly closed against high injection pressures.

• Shot Capacity: The maximum volume of melted plastic the machine can inject in a single stroke.

Defects and Common Issues

• Flash: Excess plastic that leaks out of the cavity and onto the parting line.

• Sink Marks: Small surface depressions or dimples caused by uneven internal shrinkage.

• Short Shot: An incomplete fill where the plastic solidifies before finishing the entire cavity.
